Why does Margret Kochamma blame Estha for Sophie Mol's death, even though she does not know if Sophie Mol was killed by someone? I think it is because Margret Kochamma had never really liked Ammu and thought that it was unfair that her children got to live when she was a nobody and they have no father.

I also thinks Margret Kochama is just blaming Estha. She's just thinking she has all the bad things and the others(Ammu, Estha or Rahel) have good things. Although that is not quiet true, Estha and Rahel doesn't seem so happy, as compared to ours.

I think Margaret wanted to blame Estha because he was an easy target, and also because she was feeling vulnerable. I think it is easier for a person to blame someone for the death of a family memeber (even though it wasn't Estha's fault) it feels better to accuse someone for that death. Then knowing that her child couldn't swim and that the water took her away. Margaret wanted to know that her child was strong enough, that it wasn't something like the river that killed her. When you loose something so great, like Sophie, you don't want to know that it was just her drowning (that would be to simple) it is just harder to accept as a mother.
