Ammu's character is very interesting to me, at first I thought she was just a single mother struggling to raise to children under the shame of being divorced. Then as I read further, I started to think that she was just a mean person who treated her children badly because she had been treated so badly in the past by her husband. Now I'm starting to discover the relationship between Velutha and her, realizing how difficult it could be to be in love with an "untouchable". I was wondering if anyone had any further insights to her character?

I agree with alot of what your saying about ammu and how she sometimes is a good mother and then beats her children. I really didnt like when she told rahel that she loved her a little less because that affected Rahel deeply. I think Ammu loves her children but she has issues with ehr family and husband
I think the point being made is that Ammu treats her children the way she does in order to defend them, and make sure that what happened to her does not happen to them. So really she does it because she loves them so much. That's why she told Rahel what she told her, and that's why she treats her and Estha the way she does: all done in good taste.
