On page 135, Estha is singing a poem about a tall girl with fair hair. I think she is talking about Sophie Mol because on the page before they are describing her: " Then, there, among the wash'n'wear and shiny suit cases, Sophie Mol." Do you agree with me that the poem is about Sophie Mol? Also why did the author have Sophie Mol die? Is it because if she had not died Velutha and Ammu wouldn't have gotten caught? I've noticed that Estha and Rahel are always talking about Sophie Mol. Why?

I think that Estha and Rahel talk about Sophie Mol a lot because she hugely affected their lives. She impacted the lives of everyone by how she died. The trauma from her death, the brake of hearts, the death of a young human. Is a life changing experience for everyone.

Like Chacko says, they are all Anglophiles. Sophie Mol may have been the only white girl they knew so closely, so they are probably very intrigued by this culture shock. I don't, however, think that she was killed just to expose Velutha and Ammu's relationship. Arundhati Roy had Sophie Mol die to set the book's action into motion.

I agree with Nate. They are a family of Anglophiles, and therefor are intrugued by the way she looks. Exposure to such a different culture at such a young age is bound to make an impact.
