Why do you think that the moth is sensitive spot for the entire family?
It seems like something that wouldn't emotionally affect anyone but the person the incident happened to.
In this blog a group reading THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS, by Arundhati Roy, will be discussing reading questions, theories and ideas raised by the text, and we will work to form analysis based on readings, posts and conversations in class and on this blog. Respect for each other and each other's intellect is of the utmost importance to us.

A lot of the time, Pappachi was dwelling on the fact that the man stole his moth, and it had a very negative effect on the family. It turned Pappachi into a much more bitter man. But I am still curious as to how the moth comes up all the time, not just when Pappachi is being talked about and not always when the book is sad.
The moth is a very touchy and sensitive spot for everyone since it is looked at like a family burden, that each member carries a piece of Pappachi's moth. They all hold the pain, and they all hold its secretes.
I think that Pappachi thinks that he has failed the family since his idea was stolen.
He thinks his family could have been in a better place- higher ranking- had he gotten credit. Since he's so down and depressed, a bitter man, it brought his whole family down. He started to beat his wife more and become a harsh person. This scared his children. Pappachi starts to forget about life, he thinks everything will be painful.
