This family is full of weird, quirky people who always seem to be causing pain or being caused pain. I am beginning to think that this book is mostly focused on the negative things that happen in these people's lives. Do you guys think that it is the negative events that shape our lives?

I agree with what you say about how the negative events that happen to each family member are the focal point for each character. I dont want to believe that the negative events shape our lives, but i do think they can sometimes effect us more and deeper than positive events.

I think that it is interesting how you point out that many negative things are happening in the book. I agree, actually, and I think it's important how the author portrays this side of family life. I agree with Serena that negative and positive events shape our lives.

This may be kind of a pessimistic response, but I do think that negative events shape our lives. I think that most people need to do so to make "it all" seem significant, like it means something. That's not to say that positive events aren't important too, but happiness isn't truly happy without pain, and beauty isn't truly beautiful with sorrow.
